Gwangju FC 4 Suwon Samsung Bluewings 0

By Pearse McLaughlin

Gwangju Fc’s wonderkid Eom Ji-Sung was the star of the show as he helped himself to a brace here at Gwangju Football Stadium as Gwangju FC romped to a comfortable 4-0 win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

First half chance of the game came the way of the hosts on the 3rd minute courtesy of Yool Heo as he showed terrific skill and pace to create his own opportunity but lacked any real composure when it came to the finish. It was great initial skill as Yool Heo spun Kim Joon-Su brilliantly by letting the ball run through his legs and allow him to race through on goal, but the finish didn’t match the finish as it was a tame finish and a comfortable catch for Yang Hyung-Mo.

A mere two minutes later and it would be that man again to test Yang Hyung-Mo again but this time he would be on the end of teasing ball into the box by Jasir Asani and Yool Heo managed to get in front of Han Hogang but again his header was straight at Yang Hyung-Mo. Lively start from home side.

Breakthrough for Gwangju FC came on the 18th minute as Lee Heui-Kyun gives Gwangju FC an early lead. It all came about from Ahn Young-Kyu as he was allowed to keep driving forward with the ball unchallenged before picking out the later run of Lee Heui-Kyun from deep who made no mistake by taking a touch and sliding the ball beyond the advancing Yang Hyung-Mo to make it 1-0.

The lead is doubled on the 38th minute courtesy of some Tiki-Taka football being produced by Gwangju FC, and it was finished off expertly on the half volley by Jasir Asani as he coolly slots the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. It all started with a ball smashed into the feet of Jeong Ho-Yeon who used the pace of the ball to try an impudent back hell flick which fell the way of Thomas who just cushioned the ball off to Jasir Asani and he did the rest with an unbelievable side foot half volley into the bottom left-hand corner. 2-0. Champagne football on show by Gwangju FC. Scintillating stuff.

Last action of the half saw Eom Ji-Sung evade his marker and have a free header on the penalty spot from a deep in swinging free kick from Jasir Asani but for a brilliant stop from Yang Hyung-Mo to keep the score down at 2-0. Woeful defending from Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Should have been 3-0 and Eom Ji-Sung knows it as his header wasn’t far enough in the left-hand corner.

Gwangju FC lead 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Lee Heui-Kyun and Jasir Asani. The pick of the goals must be Jasir Asani’s as you will struggle to see a better team goal in world football! Gwangju Fc have dominated the first half from start to finish and will be looking for more of the same whereas Suwon Samsung Bluewings will be looking to shore up that defence which has looked shaky and offer an attacking threat. But you can only see one winner of this game and that is Gwangju FC.

Only 90 seconds into the second half and Gwangju FC have made it 3-0 courtesy of Gwangju FC’s young star, Eom Ji-Sung. Eom Ji-Sung gathers the ball on the left wing before cutting inside and switching the play over to Jasir Asani who faced up his man before firing in a dangerous low cross along the six-yard-box which saw Eom Ji-Sung complete the one two and make it 3-0. Great forward thinking by Eom Ji-Sung as soon as he’s released the ball, he is bursting a gut to get into the box and his perseverance paid off as he was in the right spot to slide home. Gwangju FC off to an electrifying start to the second half.

Eom Ji-Sung has doubled his tally for tonight with a wonder strike into the bottom right-hand corner on the 52nd minute of the game. Eom Ji-Sung collects the ball with his back to goal at the angle of the box before turning onto his favoured right foot feigning to shoot not once but twice before gaining that half yard away from Kazuki Kozuka and curling the ball into the bottom right-hand corner. Emphatic finish. 4-0 and cruising for Gwangju FC. Suwon Samsung Bluewings never got close enough to Eom Ji-Sung and if you allow good players time and space, they will punish you.

First meaningful chance of the game for the visitors came on the 68th minute courtesy of substitute Dave Bulthuis. It was from Suwon’s greatest resource and that is set pieces and there’s no one better in the league from dead balls the Lee Ki-Jee as he picked out last week’s match winner, Dave Bulthuis but he couldn’t add to last week’s heroics as he blazed his volley over from five-yards out. Too little too late from Suwon Samsung Bluewings but that was a real chance to give themselves a glimmer of hope, but unfortunately centre back Dave Bulthuis produced a defender’s finish.

Substitute Fejsal Mulic nearly scored an unbelievable free kick in the third minute of added on time at the end of the game as his free kick from 30 yards out looked destined for the top right-hand corner but crashed off the inside of the right-hand post and away to safety. Terribly unlucky. It would have been one of the goals of the season from the big Serbian as it takes a lot of skill, practice, and precision to strike the ball the way he did. It stays 4-0.

It's all over here at Gwangju Football Stadium as Gwangju FC ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Two goals in either half saw Gwangju FC in real control and thoroughly deserve their win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings who themselves only mustered chances at 4-0 down and after Gwangju FC had shut up shot. Disappointing afternoon from the victors and one they will want to forget quickly.

Next up for Gwangju FC is a tough away trip to face the runaway leaders and current champions, Ulsan Hyundai. The match will be played next Sunday the 3rd of September and Gwangju FC will be in a buoyant mood having just thumped Suwon Samsung Bluewings 4-0 tonight.

Next up for Suwon Samsung Bluewings is a home match against managerless FC Seoul next Saturday the 2nd of September which will be a tough test, but Suwon will be hoping for a reaction following tonight’s poor showing.
